Caution - Not all "small family breeders" are alike. Many breeders that claim they are small and not a "puppy mill" are actually just that, a large, profits first - dogs second, breeding business! Dogs and puppies bred and raised in these conditions may not be properly socialized, or even worse, not healthy! Dogs in these facilities are often kept caged in deplorable conditions!

Many of these breeders also practice line-breeding and even in-breeding, in attempts to try and fix and recreate certain traits that they desire, in order to market their dogs as "special" and thereby make more profit. Many times the traits they are trying to reproduce go against the established standards of the breed! This also increases the chance of health problems, deformities and genetic anomolies.

If you breeder will only meet you somewhere to deliver your puppy, or only ship it to you, and does not allow anyone to visit their facility and meet the parents - STOP - they may be hiding something!
